`meter n · unit 1/n` Meter and unit

meter is how many beats a measure has and unit is the note value of one beat, so meter 6 with unit 1/8 is 6/8. The default is 4/4.

A measure holds meter × 16 ÷ unit sixteenths: 4/4 is 16, 3/4 is 12, 6/8 is 12.
The meter only matters inside bars. Unbarred notes play at their written length.
unit 8 is an older spelling of unit 1/8.

A measure of 3/4 holds three quarter notes.
